    LABORATORY MANAGER - LABORATORY

    Ocean Side CA Region.

    COMPENSATION

    Base Salary - USD $101,358 to $172,203

    We are looking for a Laboratory Manager with a $1,000 Sign-On Bonus for the Laboratory at Providence Medical Foundation. $1,000 Sign-on Bonus for eligible external candidates who meet all conditions for payment - this is in addition to the fantastic benefits and compensation package offered by Providence that begin on your first day of employment.

     

    Work Schedule: Full time - 80 Biweekly Hours

    Shift: 8-hour, Days

     

    Job Summary:

    Reporting to the Executive Director, the Clinical Lab Manager is responsible for the technical performance of the department. The position entails oversight and integration of the day-to-day laboratory activities to ensure that efficient, accurate, and clinically relevant services are provided. The Manager must combine a comprehensive knowledge of laboratory science and effective organizational skills to coordinate the processing of laboratory specimens and reporting on test results. This role develops, revises, and evaluates new/alternative methods, and makes recommendations to the Administrative Director regarding equipment, staffing, and problem solving. Support is also provided to the Administrative Director on technical and operational issues involving other hospital departments and the medical staff.

     

    Essential Functions:

    Conducts regular performance monitoring of staff through review of pending and completed test results using various special reports. Internal quality control and external proficiency testing is continuously monitored. Appropriateness and completeness of documentation on QC problems, result error corrections, and critical value notification is reviewed, and staff members are counseled as necessary.

    Maintains technical expertise in the performance of tests to readily recognize and help resolve problems with test methods, instrument operation, quality control, or unexpected patient findings. Ensures that written procedure descriptions are current, accurate, reviewed, and revised as needed. Evaluates new test procedures for feasibility, accuracy, and precision, and recommends as to their suitability.

    Coordinates the daily operational activities to ensure maximal service is provided to the patients and the medical staff. Maintains an open line of communication with staff members and supervisors to provide guidance and support and to assist in problem identification and solving. Assists with unusual test request, specimen processing difficulties, and other special circumstances that may arise. Acts as a liaison with nursing departments to evaluate service concerns and affect solutions. Provides guidance on development and administration of laboratory POCT’s.

    Implements contingency strategies for unexpected situations, such as test system problems and computer malfunction. Ensures that nursing departments and physicians are assessed and essential patient care activities are maintained. Provides input for the integration of external module to optimize their function and effectiveness. Troubleshoots computer problems and assist in training.

    Assists in development, review, revision, and implementation of department policies. Ensures that regulations from the various licensing agencies are adequately incorporated into the technical procedures and operations. Provides support for staff when unexpected situations arise. Assumes the duties of the Administrative Director in his absence.

    Review and follow-up on quality of service issues as they relate to technical operations (“Problem ID, “Interdepartmental Communication” forms etc.). Conducts and reports on focused Q/A studies. Writes custom computer reports to assist in the collection of information for service assessments, etc.

    Administers performance appraisals for day shift Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a timely fashion. Consults with Administrative Director on new Clinical Laboratory Scientist hires. Issues disciplinary actions as needed, for same.

    Writes technical reports, newsletters, and operations announcements that are generated to various departments, staff, and physicians. Attends outside educational seminars/workshops to develop and refine technical and management skills, and makes effective application of techniques learned. Meets with outside sales and technical representatives to evaluate new products, test methods, and instruments.

     

    Skills:

    Proficient understanding of EHR systems interface with lab systems.

    Must have a working knowledge of California Business & Professional Code, JCAHO, CAP, and other regulatory requirements.

    Good interpersonal skills and attention to detail.

    Good communication skills, both verbal and written.

     

    Minimum Position Requirements:

    Education: Bachelor's Degree

    Experience:

    5 years Laboratory supervisory experience.

    Strong background in laboratory science and analytical techniques.

    Licenses/Certifications:

    Valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.

    Valid California driver’s license.

    Automobile insurance for employee-owned vehicles.

     

    Preferred Position Qualifications:

    Education: Master's Degree

    Experience:

    Strong administrative and managerial experience in a clinical laboratory setting.

    7 years work experience as a manager or director in a clinical laboratory.

    Proficient and experienced with CAP/COLA regulations for Medical Labs.

    Experienced in lab-based software for lab specimen processing.

    Licenses/Certifications: Registered member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

    Valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license
